The front page story about screening women for cervix cancer in Thailand, that was continued on page A3, had some interesting quotes. This quote: ‘ “Some doctors resist” the cryptotherapy approach, said Dr. Wachara Eamratsameekool. This indicates a clear effort by the NYT to not plagiarize.

Furthermore I still think the American army’s casualties count in the daily newspaper is somewhat disturbing.

The follow-up story in the national section of the newspaper on the floodings in Penssylvania were well done, this time with more pictures and not as much focus on one individual.

Also, the article on poverty and unemployment is shocking, I hope it sparks the government to do something about the nonexistent social security.

Risk of Shark Attacks in New Hampshire

The recent fatal shark attacks that have occured in Amity are a rarity in the New England area. According to the records of the Ichthytology Department of the Florida Museum of Natural History, in the period 1959 - 1994 there have been zero recorded shark attacks in New Hampshire. To put this in contrast, in the same period of time, New Hampshire was struck by lightning 76 times, resulting in 8 deaths. The seacoast around Maine has also remained shark-free during the 1959 - 1994 period of time. Moreover, About.com guide Kim Knox Beckius reassures worried tourists on her website that "[s]hark attacks in New England have historically been extremely rare". She quotes the Coast Guard advisory by saying: "There have been no recent sightings along coastal beaches". This article was dated July 2, 2010. Therefore, no New Hampshire inhabitants need to worry about the possible risk of a shark attack.
